When it comes to automobiles, Germany is well-known for producing some of the most well-engineered cars on the planet. With manufacturers like Porsche, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, German car manufacturers produce the top-selling luxury vehicles. Trusted brands like Volkswagen bring German engineering to homes of millions of families all over the world.
Founded in 1932 in Chemnitz, Germany, Audi designs, develops and engineers luxury automobiles. The company has been a majority owned subsidiary of Volkswagen since 1966. Today, the company offers a line of cars, coupes and SUVS, racing models and sports cars.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, better known as BMW, was founded in 1916. Headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, this famous car manufacturer also owns and produces the Mini cars. Headquartered in Niehl, Cologne, Ford-Germany is a subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. Ford made its first appearance in Germany in 1912 in Hamburg. But it wouldn’t be until 1929 that the Niehl headquarters in Cologne would be built. Although Ford-Germany has seen a fair share of up and downs over the years, it still remains as a strong competitor in the auto market.

Mercedes-Benz is a multinational division of Daimler AG. Known for its lineup of luxury vehicles, trucks, coaches and buses, the auto manufacturer is a part of the German Big 3. The first Mercedes automobile was marketed in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Today, the car brand is one of the most established and well-known car brands in the world.

Headquartered in Rüsselsheim, Hesse, Opel is a subsidiary of General Motors. The car brand designs, engineers and manufactures both light commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles. Oddly enough, the company’s roots can be traced back to a sewing company founded by Adam Opel back in 1862. Opel would eventually manufacture bikes in 1886 and produce their first automobile in 1899.

Founded in 1937, Volkswagen is the biggest German automaker and the top-selling. In fact, three of the cars on 24/7 Wall Street’s 10 best-selling cars list are manufactured by Volkswagen. Its name means “the people’s car,” a fitting name for one of the first German automakers to develop cars for the average family.
